SOU gets hot, hangs on to beat Corban

SALEM – Southern Oregon finally rediscovered its outside shooting touch on Saturday night and needed all 10 of its 3-pointers to survive another nip-and-tuck battle at Corban.

The No. 23 Raiders got a badly-needed, 86-83 win at the C.E. Jeffers Center over the Warriors, who were coming off a convincing upset of No. 20 Oregon Tech. It wasn't over until Corban guard Chris Martin intercepted an inbounds pass with two seconds left and missed a clean look from the top of the key as the buzzer sounded.

Martin scored 16 of his 23 points in the second half to help the Warriors chip away at what was a 72-55 Raider lead with 10 minutes remaining, but the comeback was not entirely surprising: Of the last eight matchups between the teams, two have gone to overtime and five have been decided by two or three points in regulation. The Raiders (11-7 overall, 6-3 Cascade Conference) have won each of those.

A night after a disheartening loss at Northwest Christian, they put forth a more spirited effort led offensively by sophomore forwards Jordan Hunt, who had 19 points with 3-of-5 shooting from 3 and seven rebounds, and Tate Hoffman, who scored 15 points with two 3-pointers, some clutch free throws down the stretch and three blocks.

Senior guard Kenny Meyer steadied the Raiders with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting, eight rebounds and three assists. Ben DeSaulnier had 11 points and six rebounds, Aaron Borich scored 10, and Tristen Holmes recorded eight points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Hunt, who went for a season-high 23 points at NCU, helped the Raiders build a lead – which they kept for the final 38 minutes – with 11 first-half points. Triples from Borich and Hoffman put them up 43-35 at the break.

Conor Carroll's three-point play and deep 3-pointer gave SOU its largest lead at 17 points midway through the second half. To climb back in it, the Warriors (12-7, 6-5) hit six 3-pointers the rest of the way after making two up to that point.

The Raiders went 10-of-23 beyond the arc, with Hunt delivering the last make from the wing to put them up 10 points with four minutes left. Their 44-percent clip came after they'd shot 27 percent (26-of-97) in their four previous games since the holiday break; before then, they'd shot 40 percent on the season.

They'll return home next weekend, facing The Evergreen State (Wash.) on Saturday and Northwest (Wash.) on Sunday. Both games tip off at 6 p.m.
