#14 Embry-Riddle, #8 Simon Fraser slow down Raiders

PORTLAND – The shorthanded Southern Oregon men's wrestling team surrendered early leads and dropped duals against No. 14 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.), 24-17, and No. 8 NCAA Division II squad Simon Fraser (B.C.), 28-16, on Friday night at Warner Pacific's Bart Valentine Court.

Trey Long (125 pounds), Matt Peterson (133) and second-ranked Devin Poppen (141) each went 2-0 in their matches, but the efforts weren't enough to keep alive the eight-dual winning streak SOU brought to the table. The 11th-ranked Raiders dropped to 9-4 heading into next Friday's matchup at No. 10 Menlo (Calif.).

Long extended his winning streak to five by knocking off Embry-Riddle's 10th-ranked Chandler Strand, whom Long pinned in 1:39, and defeating Simon Fraser's Oscar Bulaqui by 10-1 major decision. Peterson also pulled off an upset of Embry-Riddle's No. 19 Collin Anderson, 8-2, and pinned SFU's Riley Prough in 2:27.

Poppen – who has now won 12 straight – finished a 17-0 technical fall over Embry-Riddle's 18th-ranked Cameron Huizar in the second round, then won by fall in 2:52 against SFU's Cruz Velasquez. After moving up two spots in this week's latest national poll, the junior upped his record to 21-4.

The Raiders, however, didn't have enough firepower to hang onto leads of 17-0 and 16-0 without No. 4 Hunter Hodges (157) or No. 10 Chandler Michael (149) in the lineup. Scottie Stockman delivered three more points with a 5-0 win against Embry-Riddle's Carlos Apodaca at 157, but the Eagles won the last five matches of the dual and clinched on David Rupp's 4-1 defeat of Zane Wardwell in the heavyweight bout.

Simon Fraser won the last seven matches against the Raiders, getting pins from Tanner Spray (165) and Nolan Badovinac (184). The latter fall put them ahead, 21-16, for good.
