Holmes' game-winner lets SOU escape Multnomah unscathed

PORTLAND Tristen Holmes hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left and Southern Oregon overcame a nightmarish start to hold off Multnomah, 83-80, in Cascade Conference play Friday night at Lytle Gym.

In the first half, the Raiders (14-7 overall, 9-3 CCC) shot 1-of-14 from 3 as the Lions (6-16, 3-10) lit them up with a 10-of-22 show from downtown to build a lead that was as large as 18 points and settled at 44-30 by the break.

SOU scored 16 unanswered to start the second half, a spurt keyed by two Ben DeSaulnier 3-pointers, before Multnomah rediscovered its outside touch and a back-and-forth battle began. With 1:32 remaining, the Raiders needed Conor Carroll's second 3 to tie the game.

They got a stop and a rebounds with 25 seconds left. Coming out of a timeout, Holmes dribbled down the clock and stared down a zone defense before pulling the trigger on and downing a 21-footer. As time expired, Ben Grandle's desperation shot sailed wide of the rim.

Carroll scored a team-high 19 points, including 12 on 4-of-5 shooting in the first half to help the Raiders withstand Multnomah's barrage, at least to some degree. DeSaulnier finished with 18 points, Kenny Meyer had 10 points and eight rebounds, and Holmes tallied eight points and 11 boards. Tate Hoffman added night points and Aaron Borich scored all eight of his after halftime.

After going 13-of-33 from the field in the first half, SOU shot 19-of-35 overall and 6-of-12 from deep in the second.

The Lions – who got 15 points apiece and nine combined 3-pointers from Brett Blackstock, Trey Fountain and Ben Grandle – finished 17-of-40 from 3. Prior to their performance, no Raider opponent had hit more than 11 triples in a game this season.

The Raiders and their opponents have been separated by four or fewer points in the final minute during six of SOU's nine conference victories.

At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, the Raiders will remain in Portland to settle a second-place tie with Warner Pacific, which held on to defeat Oregon Tech in its game Friday.
