Rocky takes tourney championship from SOU in shootout

SPRINGFIELD – Rocky Mountain (Mont.) netted an equalizer in the 72nd minute and had a 4-3 advantage in penalty kicks over Southern Oregon, claiming the CCC Championships presented by U.S. Bank title in excruciating fashion Saturday at Les Schwab Sports Park.

Top-seeded SOU's Mitchell Pinney deposited a header in the 59th minute, made possible by Brendan Allen's long pass, for the first score of the game. The Raiders (16-2-3) hadn't given up a lead against a CCC team all season until Tulio Melo tied it, striking from 18 yards out after Sky Swenson's deflected corner kick fell in his lap.

The Bears (16-4-1), seeded third in the tournament, ultimately had keeper Kristofer Wennin to thank for the title. Along with his stops in the shootout, he made a diving save of a Paul Matyas shot six minutes into the first extra session.

SOU's Ahmon Afenegus nearly had the golden goal in the 108th minute when his shot hit the crossbar and bounced clear of the goal.

In the shootout, RMC's Milo Downey, Quique Garcia, Pablo Ferreira and Swenson each converted. SOU's Luis Aguilar, Michael Miller and Kelly Gieber finished their shots, but Wennin made back-to-back diving stops of the Raiders' third and fourth attempts.

Rocky has captured two tournament championships since joining the circuit in 2015.

Both teams will have spots in the 31-team NAIA National Tournament. The entire field, along with the 15 pairings for next Saturday's Opening Round, will be revealed at 10 a.m. Monday.
