LA GRANDE – Southern Oregon allowed Eastern Oregon to get loose behind the 3-point line and sophomore guard Jordan May exploded for 34 points in an 83-77 Mountaineers win Friday night at Quinn Coliseum.
May, last year's Cascade Conference Newcomer of the Year, shot 12-of-23 from the field and 7-of-12 from 3 in the Cascade Conference opener for both teams. The Mountaineers (5-6) got 22 more points and eight rebounds out of Landon Jones, who made both of his 3-point attempts and helped them shoot 12-of-22 from outside overall.
Tristen Holmes had 24 points and six rebounds,
Tate Hoffman registered his third double-double with 19 points, 12 rebounds and four assists, and
Jordan Hunt added 17 points and six boards for the 13th-ranked Raiders (9-2), whose winning streak ended at six games.
SOU held a 31-22 lead with eight minutes left in the first half before EOU staged an 11-0 run keyed by a pair of May triples, sending the teams into halftime tied at 35.
The Mountaineers knocked down six of their nine 3-point attempts in the second. The Raiders trimmed a nine-point deficit to 71-66 on a Hoffman jumper with 4:12 left and had four empty possessions – turning the ball over twice in transition – before EOU put the game away.
May's contested jumper with 1:36 left made it 75-68, and his uncontested 3-pointers 30 seconds later extended the lead to 10.
The Raiders have dropped their last four games in La Grande.
They'll finish the trip at 6:30 p.m. PST Saturday at second-ranked College of Idaho, which hung on Friday for a 71-68 win against Oregon Tech.
