SPRINGFIELD – The Southern Oregon men's soccer team's first game of the postseason, a 1-0 win over Oregon Tech on Wednesday night at the Willamalane Sports Complex, didn't look all that different from the 14th-ranked Raiders' last two months of work.
Especially on paper. The top-seeded Raiders (15-2-2) eliminated the No. 8-seeded Owls (7-9-2) in the quarterfinal round of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank with their 13th shutout of the season, limiting OIT to one shot on goal, and got the game-winning goal from
Yan Pessoa de Oliveira in the 49th minute.
Neither team recorded a shot on goal in the first half, but used a set piece SOU to gain the advantage. Off a
Luis Aguilar corner kick, Pessoa de Oliveira headed in his fifth score of the season, and Aguilar got his fourth assist.
The Owls played a man down after GeRysand Cabanilla attracted a red card 27 minutes into the contest.
The Owls are 0-5 all-time against the Raiders and have been shut out in the last four matchups. They wrapped up at 7-9-2 overall.
SOU will play a semifinal game at 7 p.m. Thursday against No. 7 seed Carroll (Mont.), which upset second-seeded Corban in overtime, 3-2. The other two semifinals had yet to be played at the time of publication.
The Raiders, now unbeaten in 17 consecutive games, defeated Carroll last week in Helena, 3-1. The Saints became the first CCC team to take a lead against SOU, but the Raiders stormed back with three unanswered second-half goals to clinch the regular-season title.
The Raiders have still yet to concede a goal when playing with the lead against a CCC opponent.
