ASHLAND – The 15th-ranked Southern Oregon men's wrestling team didn't have enough to hang with No. 3 Montana State-Northern in dual action Tuesday night, but
Pancho Barrera and
Max Hane strengthened their individual cases for national rankings during the 30-10 loss at Riehm Arena.
Barrera, a junior 125-pounder, and Hane, a senior heavyweight, started and ended the night with wins for the Raiders, who went to 3-2 in dual matches. The Lights (7-1) claimed the rest of the weight classes behind seven nationally-ranked individuals.
After debuting with an upset of the ninth-ranked wrestler at the NCAA Division II level Saturday against San Francisco State, Barrera followed up with a pin of 10th-ranked Nick Kunz. With the clock winding down in the third period, Barrera tied it with a two-point near fall, and with two seconds on the clock, the fall was awarded.
Hane shot to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in dual matches with a convincing 16-7 major decision over Jase Stokes, who entered the matchup ranked 12th in the NAIA and second in the Cascade Conference. Hane was No. 4 in the CCC as of last week's rankings.
The Lights dominated otherwise. After Kieton Keller accepted a forfeit at 133 to tie the match, they won seven consecutive contests. They amassed a 25-4 advantage in takedowns.
In the night's most highly-touted matches, second-ranked Brandon Weber topped third-ranked
Chandler Michael, 7-2, at 157 pounds; 13th-ranked Chase Short held off 12th-ranked
C.J. McKinnis, 7-3, at 184; and second-ranked Isaac Bartel outlasted fourth-ranked
Tanner Fischer, 6-4, at 197.
Both teams will compete Thursday at the Reno Tournament of Champions. After that, SOU will be off until Jan. 4-5 at the NWCA-NAIA National Duals in Louisville, Ky.
