RENO, Nev. – Tanner Fischer was the first Southern Oregon wrestler to reach the quarterfinals in two years at the Reno Tournament of Champions, and he and Devin Poppen were one win short of placing Thursday for the Raiders.
SOU was 15th of 25 teams in the points standings.
Fischer, ranked fourth in the NAIA at 197 pounds, entered the tournament with an 11-2 record and won his first three matches. He started with pins of Cal Poly's Willem de Boer in 3:44 and Clackamas's Darry Aiello in 1:06, then advanced to the quarters with a 6-4 decision over JJ Dixon.
The Citadel's Sawyer Root sent Fischer to the consolation bracket in a 12-4 major decision. Fischer forfeited his final match.
At 149, Poppen picked up five wins on the day, all by fall. His first lasted 4:14 against The Citadel's Selyn chon Porter before losing to Cameron Haddock, 6-3. He stayed alive with four consecutive pins – of Cal Poly's Wyatt Cornelison (0:21) and Tyler Schilling (4:45), unattached opponent Landon Knutzen (1:41), and The Citadel's Doug Gudenburr (2:00). His final consolation went down as a no-contest against Embry-Riddle's David Salazar.
Pancho Barrera (125) was the other Raider to pick up multiple wins on the day.
SOU will next be in action at the NWCA-NAIA National Duals on Jan. 4-5 in Louisville, Ky.
