PORTLAND – Southern Oregon couldn't pull off a second escape job in a row Sunday night at Jim Skagen Court, falling victim to a 62-57 upset against Multnomah in Cascade Conference action.
A night after coming back from 14 points down to defeat Warner Pacific, the 18th-ranked Raiders (8-4 overall, 4-2 CCC) erased a 13-point deficit but never got over the hump. Multnomah's Sequoia Wheeler scored 20 points, Bethany George had 17 and the pair combined for 11 in the fourth quarter to hold the Raiders off.
The Raiders trailed 32-22 after a first half in which they shot 7-of-31 from the field. Thirteen unanswered points cut it to 35-34 just 3 ½ minutes into the third, and SOU finally tied it on the first possession of the fourth. The Lions (8-7, 4-3) responded with a 10-0 spurt, keyed by a George 3-pointer and finished with a Wheeler jumper, to make it 55-45 with seven minutes to go.
Daranda Hinkey's transition basket made it a two-point game with a minute to go, but SOU missed all three of its shot to tie from that point on.
SOU forward
Ariel Augustine had 14 points and 11 rebounds, her second double-double of the season.
Destinee Jones had nine points, seven rebounds and four steals before fouling out, and
Daranda Hinkey totaled seven points, five steals and four assists.
The Raiders shot 26 percent (17-of-65) as a team.
They'll play back-to-back CCC games against Walla Walla (Wash.) next week at Lithia Motors Pavilion, at 12 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday.
