McCullough, Mountaineers edge Raiders, 81-77

LA GRANDE – Though the outcome was largely inconsequential, another close road loss stung Southern Oregon just the same Saturday night against No. 21 Eastern Oregon, 81-77 at Quinn Coliseum.

The Raiders (19-11 overall, 13-7 Cascade Conference) were bit by 20 turnovers in the regular-season finale, offsetting a 50-percent night from the field. Leading 64-63 with five minutes left, they handed the Mountaineers (21-7, 13-7) six unanswered points, including two Max McCullough layups in transition via steals to swing the game.

Regardless of the outcome, the Raiders were bound to the No. 4 seed and EOU to the No. 5 seed in the CCC tournament. The teams will rematch in Ashland at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the quarterfinal round.

McCullough scored 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting, piling on a dagger 3-pointer with 1:49 left, and teammate Austin Winegar went 8-of-13 for 20 points.

The loss spoiled another big night for sophomore forward Tate Hoffman, who tallied 19 points and eight rebounds. It also came as senior guard Kenny Meyer had 17 points, eight assists and became the 19th player in team history to score over 1,000 in his career.

Four of SOU's losses in conference play were decided by four points or fewer on the road.
