SOU applies mercy rule to Menlo, #18 Simpson

REDDING, Calif. – Third-ranked Southern Oregon slugged 24 hits and nine for extra bases to score back-to-back mercy-rule wins Saturday, 16-4 against Menlo (Calif.) and 11-2 against No. 18 Simpson (Calif.) in five innings each.

Freshman second baseman Hannah Shimek posted three doubles on the day, including two in the win over Menlo. Atop the lineup, she and shortstop Kelsey Randall combined for four hits and five runs scored against the Oaks, while Harlee Donovan went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored.

Donovan stroked a two-run single and Avery Morehead-Hutsell a two-run double in the Raiders' seven-run third inning. Randall tripled, Shimek doubled and Donovan doubled to lead off their five-run fourth.

Allie Hancock pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win.

Against Simpson, the Raiders struck in the first with Tayler Walker's two-run double. Randall added an RBI single in the second, Paige Leeper chased home Donovan with a single after Donovan's leadoff double in the third, and SOU plated three more in the fifth with the help of four walks.

Randall went 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs and Donovan and Hannah Wessel had two hits, two runs and an RBI apiece. Walker later added a third RBI.

Gabby Sandoval scattered eight hits and allowed one earned run over a complete game, improving to 4-2.

The Raiders (9-3 overall) have ticked off five straight wins and ended the last four early with the run rule. They'll play Menlo and Simpson again on Sunday.
