Raiders eke out another thriller in extras, take 2 from Carroll

ASHLAND – Southern Oregon made more late-inning sparks fly to remain tied for first place, pulling off a critical Cascade Conference doubleheader sweep of Carroll (Mont.) by scores of 3-2 in eight innings and 6-2 on Friday at University Field.

Senior catcher Harlee Donovan hit a game-ending RBI single in the bottom of the eighth of Game 1, which was the Raiders' fourth extra-inning affair in their last 10 home contests. Freshman pitcher Allie Hancock got plenty of support during her seven-hitter in Game 2.

The Raiders improved to 36-11 overall and 18-5 in the CCC. They kept pace with Corban, which also went to 18-5 with two extra-inning wins against Eastern Oregon, while Oregon Tech stayed a game back. SOU will play two more starting at 11 a.m. Saturday against Carroll (27-15, 13-10), which had won three consecutive series coming into the weekend.

The Saints were positioned to take the first one from SOU with a 2-0 lead going into the seventh inning. Allison Williams was working on a four-hit shutout and had driven in the only runs of the game with a single off Gabby Sandoval in the third.

But in the seventh, pinch-hitter Taelor Mayben led off with a single and the next batter, Tayler Walker, chased her home with a double. With one out, an error on a fielder's choice allowed Walker's pinch-runner, Davalin Ontiveros, to score from second and tie the game.

Hannah Shimek started the bottom of the eighth with a triple off the wall in center field, and Donovan bounced one through the infield to make a winner out of Sandoval (17-5), who allowed six hits in her 13th complete game.

SOU went to 5-1 in extra innings this season.

The Raiders broke open Game 2 for Hancock (8-1) with a three-run third inning. Hannah Wessel's RBI double initially put them on the board in the second, but they had four consecutive hits in the next frame – Kelsey Randall's one-out triple, Shimek's run-scoring bunt, Harlee Donvan's RBI triple and Rebecca Velasquez's RBI single – to put Carroll starter Tess Eaton (10-2) in a hole.

Velasquez – who, along with Wessel and Olivia Mackey, had two hits in the game – tacked on her second run-scoring single in the fifth.

Hancock struck out three and walked one in her complete game.
