ASHLAND – For the third time in team history and first since 1997, the Southern Oregon University volleyball team has gotten through six consecutive matches without dropping a set to start the season after overpowering William Jessup (Calif.) on Saturday by scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-18 at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
The No. 13-ranked Raiders clipped the Warriors (5-5) for the second time in as many weeks behind another sharp outing from junior right-side hitter
Taylor Ristvedt, who had 11 kills on 14 attacks, and sophomore middle
Makayla Hoyt, who added nine kills on a .692 attacking average and three blocks.
A day after sweating out three frames against Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), SOU stole the momentum with a 10-2 spurt that ended the first set. WJU's only lead the rest of the way was at 1-0 in the third.
The Raiders will attempt to complete a perfect nonleague schedule at 5 p.m. Sunday against winless Simpson (Calif.) in the final match of the Raider Invitational.
They got contributions from all around the court in hitting .333 collectively – already their fifth time over .300 this season – on an attack orchestrated by
Natalie James (25 assists) and
Hannah Bogatin (13).
Dani Johnson chipped in seven kills, including four during the set-ending rally that capped the first, while
Nila Lukens had six and
Elliott Cook five.
Emma Ryan (9 digs),
Myla Norvell (8) and
Hannah Bogatin (7) controlled the back row.
Sydney Molander's eight kills led the Warriors. In two losses to the Raiders, the failed to get past the 20-point mark.
