ASHLAND – A drama-free weekend for the No. 10 Southern Oregon volleyball team concluded with a 25-14, 25-15, 25-12 defeat of Multnomah on Saturday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion, where the Raiders' back-row defenders took their turn in the spotlight.
Junior libero
Emma Ryan was all over the floor in piling up 19 digs during the condensed match, including 10 in the second set alone, and she added four of SOU's eight service aces. Sophomore defensive specialist
Myla Norvell contributed 10 more digs, and senior
Kiley Barcroft had five digs and two aces.
Together, the rallies they prolonged caused Multnomah's attacking average to sink to .030.
The Raiders upped their record to 14-0 overall. With their 12th sweep of the season, they also maintained control of first place at 7-0 in the Cascade Conference. The Lions dropped to 1-12 and 0-6.
Natalie James (22 assists, 7 digs) and
Hannah Bogatin (15 assists, 2 aces) directed an attack that hit .273.
Makayla Hoyt was the most frequent target with 11 kills on 20 swings to go with three blocks.
Malie Rube and
Elliott Cook deposited seven kills apiece.
SOU has hit .250 or better 11 times this season after doing so eight times all of 2017.
"I felt like this entire week was an efficient one for our team," SOU head coach
Josh Rohlfing said. "We know we still have a long way to go, but we feel like we're growing offensively every match we play."
The Lions were led by Miranda Halverson's six kills and Rachel Leshikar's 12 digs. After giving up seven unanswered points to end the first set, they fell behind 9-2 in the second and 10-2 in the third.
SOU is back on the road next week, traveling to Washington to play Northwest on Friday and Evergreen on Saturday.
