ASHLAND
– The shutouts were nice, but defender Michael Miller gave himself a little extra to remember when looking back at Southern Oregon's six-point weekend to open Cascade Conference play.

Miller, a junior from Fresno, Calif., tallied his first career goal with a 49th-minute penalty kick in the Raiders' 1-0 victory over College of Idaho on Sunday afternoon at Raider Stadium. It came about after he directed a long pass from midfield into the box for Paul Matyas, who was taken out by Yotes goalkeeper Zach Dean on an attempted header.

Miller got his chance as Dean was assessed a yellow card. The keeper prematurely leaned to his left on the shot and guessed wrong, letting Miller's shot skip by untouched.

The Raiders (5-2 overall, 2-0 CCC) won their fifth straight overall, polishing off a homestand in which they also upset No. 9-ranked Rocky Mountain (Mont.). They've turned in four clean sheets in a row, and on the weekend they allowed only two meager shots on goal.

SOU dominated play with advantages of 19-3 on shots and 10-1 on corner kicks. The Yotes (1-2-1, 0-2) avoided a more lopsided outcome by making eight saves, and the Raiders' Junior Rivas had a goal wiped off the board in the 66th minute on a controversial hand-ball call.

Their lead, however, was never in serious jeopardy. C of I got off just one shot in the second half; Wyatt Zabinski's casual save of a Jack O'Leary shot with 20 seconds to play required no heroics.

Dating back to last season, the Raiders have blanked eight of nine opponents in CCC play.

They'll attempt to extend the winning streak next weekend on the road, Friday at Eastern Oregon and Sunday at Walla Walla (Wash.).
