KIRKLAND, Wash. – A month full of second-half disappointments finally turned for Southern Oregon on Saturday night at Kristi Brodin Pavilion, where the Raiders executed their biggest comeback in seven years and escaped with a 79-76 overtime win over Northwest (Wash.).
Kaj Bansen scored 18 and jump-started the Raiders' climb back from a 19-point deficit in the first half, and
Tate Hoffman helped them finish the deal with 20 of his 22 points and nine of his 11 rebounds after halftime. Northwest's Ryan Ricks missed a 3-pointer for the tie at the buzzer, making SOU 15-7 overall and 5-6 in the Cascade Conference.
An ugly start left the Raiders down 31-12 just 11 minutes into the game, at which point Bansen drilled 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions to trim the Eagles' lead to 10. Bansen came off the bench to go 6-of-11 from 3 off the bench, the most makes from outside for a Raider in three years.
They still needed a 9-0 run and
Tristen Holmes' buzzer-beating floater to go into halftime down 46-39. And, trailing 60-50 with 11 minutes left, Hoffman scored nine during a 15-2 spurt and capped it with a transition 3 to give them their first lead.
SOU went scoreless over the final 3:43 of regulation and Hussayn Ford's bucket inside knotted the score, 70-70, with under a minute to go. SOU had two shots to take the lead on the final possession but missed them both.
Bansen ended the drought with his final triple just four seconds into overtime, and Hoffman's turnaround jumper later made it 77-72. With 35 seconds left and Northwest down three, Ford finished inside again and drew a foul, but missed the free throw for the tie.
On the other end, Holmes provided the final score on a runner at the hoop with seven seconds on the clock.
Hoffman's double-double was his fifth of the season.
Tez Allen contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists. He was also tasked late with defending Ford, helping hold him to 2-of-9 shooting after halftime.
Conor Carroll added eight first-half points that kept the Raiders afloat, going 2-of-4 from 3.
Ford's 23 points and nine rebounds led Northwest. Nick Navarro scored 20 off the bench and sparked the Eagles during their first-half run with four triples.
SOU returns home next week to face Multnomah on Friday and Warner Pacific on Saturday.
