Hot 3rd quarter propels Owls past Raiders

KLAMATH FALLS – Oregon Tech interrupted up a back-and-forth affair with 16 unanswered third-quarter points on Tuesday against No. 24 Southern Oregon, a flurry that swung the game for good in the Owls' 71-62 Cascade Conference win at Danny Miles Court.

After a cold start left the Raiders (16-6 overall, 12-4 CCC) down by as many as nine points in the first half, they held the Owls (16-8, 10-4) to eight points in the second quarter and went into halftime down 27-26. They opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run, too, before OIT caught fire.

The Owls drilled four 3-pointers during their spurt – they'd connected on just three before it – and got the last two from freshman Kristin Farrell, a reserve guard who finished with 14 points, six rebounds and four 3s.

It was 50-43 at the start of the fourth when the Owls ran off another 8-0 segment started by Abby Kreiser and Amanda Constant 3-pointers. They went 10-of-23 in the game from downtown, while the Raiders hit a season-low three from outside.

Kreiser finished with 11 points, seven assists and three steals. Owls all-star Nohea Waiwaiole checked in with 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two blocks.

SOU's Dominique Harding and Ariel Augustine scored 18 apiece. Harding went 6-of-7 from the field, pulled down five rebounds and had three of the Raiders' eight steals, while Augustine finished 8-of-19 with seven boards. Destinee Jones added six points and nine rebounds and Sophia Altemus scored nine off the bench.

SOU and OIT have split each of their last three regular-season series.

The Raiders had won four straight entering the contest.

They'll be off until a Feb. 8 visit to Corban (10-3 CCC), which moved one game ahead of them in the loss column in second place.
