SOU goes cold late in loss to Tech

ASHLAND – Mitchell Fink scored 21 points, Tyler Hieb had 20 and the backcourt duo combined for 26 in the second half to lead 14th-ranked Oregon Tech back for a 77-70 win against No. 18 Southern Oregon on Tuesday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

The Raiders (13-5 overall, 3-4 Cascade Conference) went ice cold down the stretch as they watched what was 52-43 lead with 12:30 left evaporate. They missed all eight of their 3-point attempts in the second half after going 5-of-9 in the first and finished 13-of-23 at the free-throw line.

Hieb sparked the Owls (15-4, 6-1) with all three of his 3-pointers in the second after Fink hit two of them to keep them close late in the first. Matt Van Tassell's tip-in with 6:48 left gave OIT its first lead of the game, 58-57, and Hieb's 3-pointer on the Owls' next trip down the floor reinforced the momentum swing.

With 1:16 to go and the Owls up three, Fink provided the dagger with his deepest shot of the night.

Tristen Holmes scored 24 to lead the Raiders, whose only conference losses the last two seasons have come against the Owls. Tez Allen contributed 13 points and five rebounds and Jordan Hunt went for 12 and 10.

The Owls ran up a 26-6 advantage in bench points. Van Tassell had nine of them with eight rebounds and Kaison Faust contributed eight and eight.

After shooting 50 percent from the field before halftime and taking a 40-34 lead into the break, the Raiders went 11-of-35 the rest of the way.

They'll get a chance to regroup at home, hosting Northwest Christian on Friday and Corban on Saturday.
