SOU breaks through in 2nd half for 5-1 win at Northwest Christian

SPRINGFIELD – The Southern Oregon men's soccer team completed a four-point weekend on the road by turning a halftime tie into an easy win, scoring four times in the second half of a 5-1 decision against Northwest Christian on Saturday afternoon at Les Schwab Sports Park.

Senior Kelly Gieber and freshman Adrian Villegas logged one goal and one assist apiece as the Raiders (8-5-1 overall, 6-2-1 Cascade Conference) maintained their third-place standing while running their unbeaten streak to four games.

They won their fourth straight head-to-head against the Beacons (2-9, 2-8), who got an equalizer from Jovany Sanchez one minute before halftime after Gieber assisted Noah Addie to get the Raiders started in the 15th minute.

After recording his fifth assist of the season, Gieber got his first goal unassisted to put SOU up for good in the 52nd.

The Raiders padded the lead shortly after, when Villegas set up Alan Gaytan's sixth goal in as many games in the 62nd minute and, 30 seconds later, Sam Walker assisted Villegas.

Villegas – who established a new SOU single-season points record in Friday's tie at 21st-ranked Corban – ran his totals to nine goals and seven assists, including five and six in CCC action.

Walker picked up a second assist, the fifth of his freshman campaign, in the 73rd when Izaiha Bruce finished his first goal of the season.

The whole afternoon unfolded on the Raiders' terms: They had a 30-5 advantage in shots, and NCU keeper Julian Hernandez made 15 saves to prevent an even more lopsided outcome.

SOU will play its final home games of the regular season next week, hosting Warner Pacific at 3:30 p.m. Friday and Multnomah at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
