SPRINGFIELD – A second-half blitz powered the Southern Oregon women's soccer team back into the win column on Saturday afternoon, 4-0 over Northwest Christian at Les Schwab Sports Park.
Freshmen
Madison Childers and
Baylee Touey both recorded a goal and an assist for the Raiders, who improved to 6-5-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the Cascade Conference.
The teams were scoreless through one half despite SOU's 13-1 advantage in shots. Beacons keeper Katie Hastings made nine consecutive saves before the Raiders began pouring it on, starting with
Michala Denn's goal assisted by
Misty Martinez in the 56th minute.
That was the first of four scores in a 22-minute stretch, which gave the Raiders their highest single-game goal total in over a year.
In the 70th minute, Touey assisted Childers' third goal of the season. In the 78th,
Phoebe Bunn set up Touey's team-leading seventh. And 14 seconds later,
Sarah Mauk finished a pass from Childers for her first collegiate points.
The final shot disparity was 24-3. The Raider defense only made
Kailey Lemon face one shot on goal in their fifth shutout of 2019 and first of the month.
The Beacons dropped to 2-13 overall and 1-9 in the CCC.
The Raiders, who had been winless in its four previous outings, hope to bring the momentum to their final home games next week. They'll play Warner Pacific at 1 p.m. Friday and Multnomah at 10 a.m. Sunday at Raider Stadium.
