ASHLAND – Darius-James Peterson passed for 320 yards and five touchdowns in seventh-ranked College of Idaho's first-ever win at Raider Stadium, 42-14 over Southern Oregon in Frontier Conference play on Saturday afternoon.
While moving within one win of clinching at least a share of their first Frontier title, the Yotes (7-0 overall, 7-0 FC) zapped the slim postseason hopes to which the Raiders (3-5, 3-4) were clinging and ended their winning streak at three games.
SOU saw outstanding performances from the receiving duo of
Jordan Suell, who totaled 126 reception yards with slick touchdown catches of 59 yards in the first quarter and 32 in the second, and
Christian Graney, who pulled in eight receptions for 101 yards.
But the Raiders' upset bid took a major hit in the turnover department – they had three in the first half, wrapping with four – and they were unable to slow down a Yotes offense that compiled 537 total yards, the highest for an SOU opponent in conference play since 2016.
SOU trailed 21-14 before the Yotes took over with 1:24 left in the first half and traveled 60 yards, scoring on Peterson's 10-yard pass to Keegan Crafton with 10 seconds to spare.
The teams then went scoreless until C of I put the game away with 8:12 to play, when a receiver pass from Bo Stevens to Dominic Garzoli made it 35-14.
Peterson completed 19-of-30 passes and added a team-high 83 rushing yards. Crafton collected a pair of TD passes and Hunter Juarez had two, finishing with 144 yards on five catches.
Taeson Hardin headlined the Yotes' defensive efforts with two interceptions. He also recovered a fumble in the end zone that appeared initially to be a Raider touchdown and could have tied the score at 14-all early in the second quarter.
SOU quarterback
Wyatt Hutchinson went 19-of-32 for 258 yards.
Raider linebacker
Collin Crown led the team with 11 tackles and was credited with half a sack. Gerald Green (6 tackles) and
Tre Holmes both recovered fumbles, and
Alejandro Sanchez forced one.
SOU will play its final home game at 1 p.m. next Saturday against 20th-ranked Montana Tech before finishing with two on the road.
