Raider comeback spoiled as Royals hang on in overtime

FULLERTON, Calif. – Southern Oregon and Hope International exchanged leads five times in the final five minutes of regulation before heading to overtime, where the Royal preserved their perfect record with an 82-78 win on Friday at Darling Pavilion.

Anthony Garcia had 26 points and scored HIU's last five at the free-throw line, and Kane Daniels hit two of his six 3-pointers during the extra session to help the Royals improve to 7-0.

The Raiders (3-2) trailed 55-45 before Tate Hoffman's 3-pointer with seven minutes remaining sparked a 13-2 run, capped by another 3 from Jayson McMillan. With 54 seconds left, Tez Allen's second-chance jumper put the Raiders up 67-66, but a Josh Powell-Davis free throw on the other end tied the score for the eighth time.

Allen's jumper on SOU's final possession in regulation was blocked, sending the game to OT.

All five Raider starters scored in double figures: Hoffman had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists; Jordan Hunt had 14 points and eight rebounds; Aaron Borich went for 14 points, five assists and four steals; Allen totaled 13 points and nine rebounds; and Conor Carroll added 11 points.

The Raiders raced out to a 26-13 lead but went into halftime down 38-33, plagued by 13 first-half turnovers. They committed just seven the rest of the way and shot 47 percent from the field (33-of-71).

The Royals shot just 36 percent from two-point range but went 11-of-16 beyond the arc. They also got to the line for 27 attempts, and Garcia hit 12 of 13.

SOU will remain at the HIU Classic to play at 1 p.m. Saturday against 15th-ranked Vanguard (Calif.), another member of the NAIA Division I Golden State Athletic Conference.
