LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. – Rain wiped out a majority of Southern Oregon's scheduled games at the NAIA SoCal Classic, but the third-ranked Raiders squeezed in an 8-0 win against Aquinas (Mich.) late Saturday night at Rosetta Park before returning home.
SOU (4-1) and the Saints (4-4) met up for a 10 p.m. first pitch after poor field conditions put the original tournament schedule in disarray, and the Raider lineup supported
Gabby Sandoval's five-inning shutout with 10 hits. Sophomore first baseman
Tayler Walker went 2-for-2 with a solo home run, an RBI single and a successful squeeze bunt.
In her second shutout of the season, Sandoval (2-1) gave up three hits without a walk or a strikeout. She had a 3-0 lead before entering the circle:
Allie Stines,
Hannah Shimek and
Lauren Quirke loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first and scored on a passed ball, Walker's squeeze and a botched rundown.
The Raiders triggered the mercy rule with three runs in the fifth on four consecutive extra-base hits. Shimek, who went 2-for-3, started the rally with a double and Quirke chased her home with a triple. Velasquez followed with an RBI double, and Walker's first homer of the season was next after Velasquez's pinch-runner got caught stealing.
Velasquez doubled twice in the game.
The Raiders will be in San Jose, Calif., next Friday and Saturday for doubleheaders against ninth-ranked Hope International (Calif.) and Menlo (Calif.).
