LINCOLN, Calif. – Another monster inning for the Southern Oregon softball team led to an 11-3 win over William Jessup (Calif.), but the Raiders' nine-game winning streak came to an end with a 3-2 loss in the second half of the doubleheader on Saturday at Wilson Park.
A day after scoring eight in the third inning at Notre Dame de Namur, third-ranked SOU (11-2 overall) put up a nine-spot in the second against the Warriors (5-3).
Paige Leeper went 3-for-3 with a triple, a double and three runs scored, and she scored the first run of the frame before later driving in another.
The Raiders had 15 hits as five others accounted for two apiece:
Tiana Brown (2 runs, 1 RBI),
Olivia Mackey (3 RBI, 1 run),
Lauren Quirke (1 run),
Hannah Shimek and
Allie Stines (2 runs, 1 RBI). Four of their five extra-base hits came in the fateful second.
Gabby Sandoval pitched all five innings of the mercy-rule-shortened affair. She went to 6-1 in allowing six hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
In Game 2, the Raiders went up 2-1 in the sixth after Quirke tripled and
Taelor Mayben brought her home with a groundout.
The Warriors won it in the last at-bat: With runners on first and second and two out, Abbie Lewis and Jena Ovens delivered back-to-back run-scoring singles. Taylor Garcia got the complete-game victory with a four-hitter. Shimek scored the first run she gave up after tripling in the first inning.
Quirke faced all but the last batter in the circle for SOU. She struck out seven, yielding seven hits and two free passes.
SOU is scheduled to open at home on Tuesday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader against Simpson (Calif.).
