Raiders falter in final minutes at Northwest Christian

EUGENE – After blowing a 12-point fourth-quarter lead, the Northwest Christian women's basketball team scored the final eight points of the game to knock off Southern Oregon 75-69 on Saturday night at the Morse Events Center.

A quarter of runs started with the Beacons (10-18 overall, 7-12 Cascade Conference) opening the fourth with 10 unanswered points to take a 64-52 lead. The Raiders (16-8, 12-6) had answers: Ariel Augustine scored the last eight points of their ensuing 15-2 spurt, including the side-step 3-pointer that put them ahead with 2:45 to go.

Tied 67-67 after a Beacons free throw, Kalei Iwami put SOU back up two with a pull-up jumper, but NCU's Morgan McKinney responded with a shot in the lane to knot the score again with two minutes left. The Raiders went on to miss their last four field-goal attempts and were whistled for two offensive fouls the rest of the way, while the Beacons scored their last six points at the free-throw line.

Augustine had 17 points and five rebounds, and Syd Fryer had 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists to lead the Raiders. Daranda Hinkey chipped in 12 points and Destinee Jones had nine points and seven rebounds.

Though they forced 29 turnovers, the Raiders were haunted by 29 of their own – their second-highest total of the season.

McKinney totaled 17 points and seven rebounds for the Beacons, pacing four players in double figures. Sarah Reinecker went for 14 points, four assists and a pair of 3-pointers off the bench.

The Raiders are in fourth place with two games left in the regular season. They'll host College of Idaho and first-place Eastern Oregon next Friday and Saturday, tipping off at 5:30 p.m. both days.
