ASHLAND – Southern Oregon's lineup proved unsolvable for British Columbia as their series concluded Saturday afternoon with two more SOU wins, 7-3 in the third and final Cascade Conference matchup and 12-4 in a five-inning nonleague counter at University Field.
After tying a team record for hits in a game (21) during Friday's action, the third-ranked and first-place Raiders (32-5 overall, 17-1 CCC) kept piling on to complete the sweep. They finished the series with 60 hits, an absurd .513 team batting average and an aggregate score of 46-14. UBC dipped to 12-16 and 8-10.
The usual culprits had their way in leading SOU to its 16th consecutive conference victory in Saturday's opener. Despite being intentionally walked twice,
Allie Stines went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored.
Lauren Quirke went 3-for-3 with a triple, a double, three RBI and a run scored. And, least surprisingly,
Gabby Sandoval improved to 22-2 overall and 16-0 in conference games, striking out nine and yielding two earned runs in her 18th complete game.
Stines wrapped the series 9-for-11 with seven doubles, five walks (three intentional), nine runs scored and five RBI, boosting her average to .427. Quirke finished 11-for-13 with two doubles, a triple, two walks, eight RBI and six runs scored, upping her league-best average to .496.
The Raiders also got a considerable boost from the bottom of the order as
Olivia Mackey went 8-for-12 with four runs and four RBI over the four-game set.
Hannah Shimek and
Tayler Walker totaled seven hits and five RBI each, with Walker doubling twice and Shimek scoring six times.
SOU's team batting average shot 17 points in the series to .373, the third-best in the NAIA among teams that have logged at least 20 games.
The Raiders put seven on the board in the first inning of Game 2 – they amassed 18 first-inning runs in the series – in support of freshman pitcher
Jordyn Ragan. She completed the game with seven hits allowed, four strikeouts and a walk, improving to 3-0. Two of the four runs on her ledger were unearned.
With 15 total hits, the Raiders got at least one from each spot in the order, including seven combined from Stines, Shimek and Quirke at the top. Mackey added two, while Stines, Quirke and
Avery Morehead-Hutsell scored two runs apiece.
For UBC, Mia Valcke homered and Taylor Jones doubled twice in Game 1. In Game 2, Claire Eccles and Avery Hilpert both went 2-for-3.
SOU will be on the road next Friday and Saturday for a four-game set at Northwest (Wash.).
