SOU downs Corban in tourney opener, gets Oregon Tech next

ASHLAND – The offensive breakout that Southern Oregon flirted with all game long against Corban never materialized. With Gabby Sandoval in cruise control, a day after she was named the Cascade Conference Pitcher of the Year, it didn't matter.

Sandoval's 25th complete game enabled the fourth-ranked Raiders to shrug off a left-on-base column that showed 13 and settle for a 4-1 victory in their opening game of the CCC Championships presented by U.S. Bank on Friday at University Field. With her seven-hit, 102-pitch performance, she improved to 28-3 to break the conference record (and her own school record) for wins in a season.

It wasn't until they were down to their last out that the 17th-ranked Warriors (34-13) interrupted a bid for her 13th shutout, which would've broken another all-time CCC mark.

By then, the Warriors' pitching issues had already sealed their fate. They didn't issue a single walk but hit five batters, including four in the first inning and Tiana Brown and Paige Leeper with the bases packed.

The Raiders (43-7) – attempting to win their third consecutive tournament title – will play second-seeded and 10th-ranked Oregon Tech at 2 p.m. Saturday for the right to a spot in Sunday's championship round. Whoever loses will have to win three game instead of one on final day of the double-elimination event.

Brown went 3-for-3 with a double, while Tayler Walker and Allie Stines recorded two hits each. Despite their 14 hits, even the Raiders' run-scoring celebrations were subdued; Walker hit an RBI single in the fourth and Olivia Mackey added another in the seventh, but Corban cut down the Raiders attempting to score their second runs on both plays.

It mattered little to Sandoval. She struck out five with one walk and didn't have to work with a runner in scoring position until the sixth inning. She's now allowed one or no earned runs in 19 of 26 starts this season.

Dating back to 2017, the Raiders have won seven straight CCC tournament games – four of which have been against Corban.
