COSTA MESA, Calif. – For the Southern Oregon women's soccer team, freshman
Baylee Touey's breakout game coinciding with a win of unprecedented stature was no coincidence on Monday morning.
Touey, the former North Valley High star who was a three-time Oregon Sports Awards Female Prep Athlete of the Year, scored twice in the first 27 minutes of SOU's 3-0 win at No. 11 Vanguard (Calif.), the new highest-ranked team the Raiders have ever defeated.
Their eye-opening road trip started last Thursday with a 2-1 triumph at No. 25 Westmont (Calif.) – the first ranked opponent SOU had topped in nine years – and continued with Saturday's down-to-the-wire, 2-1 loss at The Master's (Calif.).
Touey, a forward who tallied 115 career goals and collected 11 individual state track titles as a prep, was quiet in both games. But she wasted no time against the Lions, who were playing their opener after last year winning a third consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference championship and appearing in a seventh straight national tournament.
In the fifth minute, she took an assist from
Aislinn Waite, beat everyone down the field and baiting Vanguard keeper Haley Magana before firing from left to inside the right post.
She struck again in the 27th minute. And in the 31st, sophomore
Kiani Pandoliano took a loose ball atop the box and placed it just under the crossbar, leaving the shell-shocked Lions down three goals.
Raider keeper
Jessie Selby faced 20 shots – the Lions had an 11-5 advantage in the second half – but preserved SOU's first shutout with seven saves. Vanguard hadn't been blanked during regular-season play in almost two years.
Waite's assist was her second in as many games. She scored in all three outings during the road trip, tallying the game-winner at Westmont.
Before opening Cascade Conference play, the Raiders (2-1) will play their next two counters against NCAA Division II teams – Sonoma State (Calif.) on Sept. 5, and Stanislaus State (Calif.) on Sept. 7.
