Raiders set down Menlo, Jessup in 4 apiece

ROCKLIN, Calif. – At the William Jessup Invitational, sixth-ranked Southern Oregon shook off early set losses to put down Menlo (Calif.) during the afternoon session and William Jessup (Calif.) late Friday night in four frames each, improving to 7-1 with two non-conference matches left to play.

The Raiders won by scores of 20-25, 25-15, 25-13 and 25-20 against Menlo (3-2) behind Taylor Ristvedt's nine kills and six blocks and Elliott Cook's eight kills and seven blocks. After totaling 12 attacking errors and five kills in the first set, they rebounded with 34 kills and 12 errors over the next three combined.

Myla Norvell stood out in the back row with 10 digs and a career-high four service aces. Senior setter Hannah Bogatin marked her season debut with 18 assists, and freshman setter Tehani Faitau went for 15 assists and eight digs.

The Oaks attacked at a .017 average and boosted SOU with 14 service errors.

SOU did a little more laboring in a 25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23 win against WJU (1-4). In jeopardy of going to a tiebreaker after three straight Warriors points knotted the score late in the fourth, Makayla Hoyt finished them off with back-to-back kills.

Hoyt racked up 13 kills on 27 attempts and a .407 average, while Ristvedt swung for 12 more on 32 tries from the right side. As a team, the Raiders hit .202 despite a .056 mark in the second frame.

Kadyn Jones led the defense with 21 digs, Emma Ryan had 15 and Norvell chipped in 12. Bogatin and Faitau combined for 35 assists and Cook, while tallying six kills, assisted three of the team's five blocks.

Hannah Henriksen kept the Warriors in the match with 13 kills and Jasmine Pinon had eight without an error.

The Raiders will remain in Rocklin on Saturday to face UC Merced at 11 a.m. and Simpson (Calif.) at 5 p.m.
