KLAMATH FALLS – Already banged up physically, the Southern Oregon men's soccer team's Cascade Conference title defense got off to a painful start on Saturday when Oregon Tech's John Sarna deposited a golden goal that sent the Raiders home 1-0 losers.
Sarna, a freshman forward, got his first collegiate points in the 109th minute. With time winding down in the second extra session, Jake Mitchell led the Owls down field on an advantage with options on both sides, and to his right led Sarna inside the box where he had a clear lane to the net.
The Owls (4-0-2 overall, 1-0-0 CCC) stayed unbeaten and got their first win six head-to-head meetings with SOU (2-4-0, 0-1-0).
The Raiders were devastated to a lesser degree four minutes before the winner as
Alan Gaytan's shot from the top of the box lined off the crossbar and back into play.
They hadn't given up a goal to the Owls in their last 494 game minutes against them going back to 2015. The loss ended a 20-game conference unbeaten streak going back to 2017.
Sarna's goal was the third winner the Raiders have given up in the 70th minute or later this season.
SOU keeper
Liam Kalhagen, filling in for injured senior all-star
Wyatt Zabinski, made three saves in his first start. OIT keeper Mitchell Jillson collected four, and
Adrian Villegas accounted for half of the Raiders' shots on goal.
The Owls had a slim edge in shots (14-12) but the Raiders were unable to take advantage of a 12-4 disparity in corner kicks.
SOU will return to Raider Stadium next week, playing Carroll (Mont.) at 3:30 p.m. Friday and Providence (Mont.) at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
