CALDWELL, Idaho – Everything went third-ranked College of Idaho's way in the final 45 seconds Friday night at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center, spoiling 39-plus minutes of impressive work by No. 15 Southern Oregon and leaving the Raiders with a collective heartache.
C of I's Ricardo Time nailed a 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds to go that put the final touches on a 9-0 Yotes run the end the game and gave them a 73-72 win that established a new Cascade Conference record for consecutive victories to start a season.
They improved to 19-3 overall and 12-0 in the CCC, setting the Raiders back to 15-5 and 9-3 despite senior forward
Tate Hoffman's 22-point, 15-rebound and six-assist outing.
SOU went up 72-64 on
Tez Allen's jumper that beat the shot-clock buzzer with 55 seconds to go. The lead was 72-68 with
Aaron Borich at the free-throw line and 26 seconds left, but he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 before C of I's Talon Pinckney raced down the floor for a layup that cut the lead to two.
A controversial Raiders turnover followed. C of I regained possession with 13 seconds left and Nate Bruneel's shot for the tie rimmed off with four seconds on the clock, but C of I was awarded another chance when the ensuing rebound resulted in a jump ball.
On a baseline out-of-bounds play, Time caught the ball in the corner and faded away with a hand in his face to score his first points of the night.
The Yotes didn't lead in the second half until then, though Pinckney kept the game from getting away with 24 points, seven assists and seven rebounds.
Jordan Hunt recorded 15 points and six rebounds and Borich had 12 points and six assists, hitting 4-of-5 attempts from 3-point range in the first half.
Conor Carroll scored 10, hitting a pair of clutch 3-pointers in the second.
The Raiders shot 48 percent from the field after sinking to a 29-percent clip in the teams' first matchup, a 70-49 Yotes win on Dec. 21 in Ashland.
The Raiders had won seven straight coming into the night. Of their five losses, three have come down to their opponents' final possessions.
They'll attempt to rebound Saturday, playing at 7:30 p.m. at Eastern Oregon.
