ATHERTON, Calif. –
Justin Acuff,
JJ Talavera and
Noah Talavera became automatic national qualifiers as Southern Oregon finished fifth place at the Cascade Conference Men's Wrestling Championships presented by U.S. Bank on Saturday at Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
Acuff, a junior 141-pounder, and
JJ Talavera, a sophomore 157-pounder, both made title-match appearances for the Raiders and took second place in their respective brackets.
Noah Talavera, a freshman 165-pounder, claimed fifth place and the final automatic qualifying bid in his weight class.
Bids were allotted based on the number of NAIA Top 20 wrestlers the CCC had in each class.
Because the 141 class had two ranked wrestlers, Acuff took the last in his despite coming into the tournament unseeded. After winning a pair of decisions Friday, he opened Saturday's action with a 7-4 semifinal defeat of Eastern Oregon's Blake McNall. Armand Molina of Simpson defeated him in the title match, 3-1, but Acuff knocked off Providence's TJ Baun for the second time in as many days in a "true" placing match to earn his first national bid.
The 157 class had four bids, so
JJ Talavera's place was safe despite being pinned in the third round by Corban's Cooper McCullough in the championship. Ranked seventh in the NAIA, he clinched by starting Saturday with a 2-1 semifinal win against 15th-ranked Sheldon Cole of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.).
Noah Talavera, who also entered the tournament unseeded, won two consolation matches before dropping a 5-3 decision to Menlo's Alejandro Garcia in the consolation semifinals. That sent him to the 165 fifth-place match, where he scored a 4-2 win over Montana State-Northern's Nakoda Siegel.
Acuff and the Talaveras will be at the NAIA Championships on March 6-7 in Wichita, Kan., each making their first appearances.
Justin Coon (133),
Layn Pannkuk (149) and
Tanner Sallee (174) each came up short in placing matches that would have made them automatic qualifiers.
After losing in a sudden victory in the semis to defending champion Blaysen Terukina of Menlo, Coon won a 6-4 consolation semifinal against MSU-Northern's Landon Bailey but lost another overtime decision to Life Pacific's Anthony Vargas in his third-place match. Pannkuk won his second and third straight consolation bouts Saturday before losing 8-4 to Menlo's Joseph Dominguez in his third-place match, and Sallee dropped a seventh-place match 3-2 to Menlo's Jordan Bernal.
Menlo took the team title, dethroning Embry-Riddle with 138.5 points to the Eagles' 119.5.
National wild card bids will be announced Tuesday with the rest of the field.
