SOU takes 2 more from Beacons, goes to 15-3

SPRINGFIELD Gabby Sandoval blanked Northwest Christian for the second day in a row and Avery Morehead-Hutsell knocked an inside-the-park home run as No. 1 Southern Oregon completed a three-game Cascade Conference sweep of the Beacons, 2-0 on Saturday at Les Schwab Sports Park.

The Raiders also won 8-4 in the fourth and final game of the series, a nonleague counter, and wrapped up the weekend at 15-3 overall and 3-0 in the CCC.

Beacons starter Emma Jegtvig two-hit the SOU lineup in Game 1, but Sandoval remained unflappable a day after establishing a new CCC career wins record. The senior hurler scattered five singles, struck out five and walked one, earning her third decision of the series and upping her record to 9-0.

Abbie Lewis manufactured a go-ahead run in the first inning. After walking to lead off the game, she stole second, was bunted to third by Hannah Shimek and driven home by an Allie Stines sacrifice fly.

Tayler Walker had SOU's only hit until the sixth, when Morehead-Hutsell's shot to right field sent her scrambling around the bases for her first career homer.

Morehead-Hutsell also went 1-for-3 with a run and two walks in Game 2. Allie Stines went 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored and a two-run double that put SOU on the board and started a four-run third inning.

The Raiders scored four more in the fourth and cruised to the finish line. Rylan Austin had a hit and two RBIs, Lauren Weinberg went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and Katrina Winterburn was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Jordyn Ragan worked the first four innings, allowing four hits and two runs, to get the win and go to 2-1. Hannah Stark finished off the last three innings and gave up just one earned run.

The Raiders will make their home debuts next week against Eastern Oregon, starting doubleheaders Friday at 1 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.
