The NAIA announced Thursday that all winter championship events, including those already underway, have been canceled effective immediately in response to the latest COVID-19 developments, and the Cascade Conference announced that is has suspended all competition for spring sports through March 29.
The Southern Oregon University men's basketball team had been scheduled to play Holy Cross (Ind.) in Friday's Round of 16 at the NAIA Division II Championships after winning its first-round game Wednesday in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Raider women's wrestling team is in Jamestown, N.D., for the NAIA Invitational Tournament, which had been scheduled to take place Friday and Saturday.
Both teams will now return to Ashland.
"The health and safety of our student-athletes, as well as all involved in our championship events, is the NAIA's highest priority," the NAIA said in a statement. "We will continue to monitor COVID-19 developments and NAIA leadership will work closely with our member institutions to determine the best path forward for future NAIA events, including all spring 2020 championships."
The NAIA took its first steps Wednesday night when it announced that attendance at the events would be limited to essential staff members and immediate family of the student-athletes.
The Raider men's basketball team finished with a 24-7 record, advancing to the Round of 16 for the fourth time in team history. The women's wrestling team was ranked No. 3 in the final NAIA coaches' poll.
The CCC made its decision shortly after the NAIA on Thursday, saying a "task force has been put in place to continue to monitor the situation and will recommend action" on if, when and how competition will resume for the regular season and postseason.
"After very thoughtful consideration, our Council of Athletic Directors and Council of Presidents support the suspension of CCC competition for a period of time," CCC commissioner Rob Cashell said. "The hiatus will allow us all an opportunity to assess the very fluid health crisis going on around the world and determine the best steps moving forward that are in the best interest of the health and welfare of the student-athletes on each of our campuses."
The CCC's task force will make its next public comment on March 29. The release added that decisions on all non-CCC sporting events -- specifically track and field meets, in SOU's case -- will be determined on a "local level."
