SOU drops another 5-setter to Northwest

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Southern Oregon served for match point but couldn't finish the job in a five-set loss to Northwest (Wash.) on Saturday night, 28-26, 23-25, 20-25, 25-18, 16-14 at Kristi Brodin Pavilion.

Abigail Broussard poured in five kills in the tiebreaker set, including one to keep the match alive with the Eagles trailing 14-13. They went ahead on the next point when Azaria Johnson and Anna Saelens teamed up for a block, then clinched the win on a Johnson kill.

NU overcame five service errors in the final frame to improve to 10-11 overall and 9-7 in the CCC. The Eagles swept the season series with SOU, winning both matches in five.

Susana Bailey dominated the rematch with 24 kills on 44 attacks, and Broussard finished with 22 kills on 40 swings and six of the team's 13 blocks.

The loss spoiled Simone Gordon's 14-kill output for the Raiders and Hailey Van Well's 12 kills on a .357 attacking average. As a team, the Raiders (11-10, 6-10) hit .220 as Taylor Russell went for 35 assists and nine digs and Gwen Sheldon had 22 and five.

SOU libero Kadyn Jones contributed 16 digs and Kayla Neidigh had 11. Middle Saide Byrd put down eight kills on 13 tries.

The Raiders are back at Lithia Motors Pavilion next week to host two of the CCC's best, Bushnell (16-3, 12-3) on Friday and fifth-ranked Corban (21-1, 15-1) on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
