ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon University women's soccer team is hot at the right time as it enters the toughest stretch on the Cascade Conference schedule this weekend at Raider Stadium.
The Raiders (6-3-1 overall, 4-1 CCC), winners of three straight and five of their last six, are holding at third place in the standings and will play three others among the top-five in consecutive games starting with Saturday's 3:30 p.m. matchup against Carroll (Mont.) (5-3-1, 4-1-1). The Saints have given up one goal in their last four outings but have yet to defeat a CCC team with a winning record.
FAN POLICY: All fans 12 and older planning to attend are subject to
SOU's new vaccination policy, which requires proof of full vaccination against Covid-19 or a negative test taken no more than 48 hours prior to entry. Photo ID must be presented for verification. Per state mandate, non-participants will also be required to wear masks regardless of vaccination status.
NAIA TOP 25: In Wednesday's latest NAIA Top 25 poll, Eastern Oregon was the CCC's lone representative, down eight spots to No. 20 after its 3-1 loss Sunday to College of Idaho. The Yotes – whom SOU will visit next week in addition to EOU – are alone in first place at 6-0 and the first team out of the Top 25 in the "receiving votes" category. Oregon Tech, whose only CCC loss was at SOU, is two spots behind C of I.
LAST WEEK IN REVIEW: The Raiders earned a key road sweep with a pair of 1-0 triumphs in Montana, starting with their first-ever win at Rocky Mountain last Friday. In the 66th minute
Jordan Bell scored her first career goal off an assist from
Ruth Hegstad's corner kick, and
Ashlynn Hernandez sealed the shutout with a season-high six saves. The next day at Providence,
Sophia Connell assisted
Mia Santander for the game-winning goal in the 87th minute and the Raiders limited the Argos to two shots on goal while generating six of their own.
BRIEFLY:
Five different Raiders have accounted for the team's six game-winning goals. Santander is the only player with two.
The Raiders have allowed two goals in conference play, tied for the fewest in the CCC with College of Idaho and Northwest (Wash.). They're up to six shutouts in 10 games, and their keepers rank Nos. 1 and 2 on the CCC leaderboard in save percentage –
Jessie Selby at .946 (35 saves, 2 goals allowed) and
Ashlynn Hernandez at .900 (18 saves, 2 goals allowed).
Sarah Mauk (4 goals, 2 assists) leads the Raiders in points and ranks seventh in the conference.
The Raiders are unbeaten in 42 consecutive games in which they've scored at least one goal.
Since the start of 2016, SOU is 29-5-3 at Raider Stadium.
ABOUT CARROLL: The Saints are off to a strong start after being picked to finish eighth in the CCC preseason poll, one spot behind the Raiders. They've totaled 20 goals to their opponents' eight, led in points by Blair Stapleton (5 goals), Melissa Dugger (3 goals, 2 asissts) and Katie Martin (2 goals, 4 assists). The Raiders are 2-7-1 all-time against them, and the teams shared the CCC regular season title in 2016.
