Juhala, Meyer lead Raiders past Antelope Valley

ASHLAND – Southern Oregon big men Joe Juhala and Josh Meyer lit up Antelope Valley (Calif.) in a strong bounce-back effort as the Raiders picked up a 77-57 nonleague win Friday at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

Juhala, a 6-foot-8 redshirt-freshman, turned in career-high totals of 20 points and nine rebounds, shooting 6-of-9 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers. Meyer, a 6-7 redshirt-junior, added his third double-double in four games with 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, going 6-of-11 with three 3-pointers.

The Raiders improved to 3-5. They got a generous boost from a bench that combined to make all five of its 3-point attempts. Jayson McMillan and Atmar Mundu both hit two and Jackson Smyth added another.

They also guarded the 3-point line as the Pioneers (5-5) clanked all 16 of their attempts from deep. UAV became the first Raider opponent to finish without a 3-point make in the last 10 years.

The Raiders were up 43-37 with 15 minutes to go before McMillan and Mundu gave them their biggest lead with back-to-back 3s. The Pioneers didn't get within fewer than 10 points the rest of the way.

Tez Allen contributed eight points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals. Jake Virga also recorded four steals as the Raiders forced 14 turnovers and held UAV to 37-percent shooting.

Juhala scored 11 of his points before halftime, helping SOU to a 35-28 lead at the break. He's scored in double figures in all but one of his six starts, averaging 14 points on 66-percent shooting over the last five games.

Arik Nicholas scored a team-high 11 points for the Pioneers.

The Raiders will play another nonleague game Tuesday at Simpson (Calif.) before returning home next Friday and Saturday for CCC games against Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho.
