Raiders victorious against WPU on senior day

ASHLAND – Southern Oregon sent senior libero Kadyn Jones out on a high note Saturday with a 25-12, 25-18, 25-11 Cascade Conference sweep of Warner Pacific at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

The Raiders ended their season at 14-13 overall and 9-13 in CCC play. It was the 90th win Jones has been a part of in her SOU career, which spans back to 2017 and includes a pair of conference regular season and tournament championships.

The Troutdale product recorded nine digs and a pair of service aces in her final outing. She finished the season with 397 digs, her SOU career with 783, and her entire collegiate career with 1,150.

Her youthful teammates had her back against the Knights (2-23, 2-20). Sophomore middle Sadie Byrd capped her strongest weekend of the season with nine kills on 12 attempts and five of SOU's eight blocks. Redshirt-freshman outside hitter Hailey Van Well had 10 kills on 18 swings, reaching double figures for the 20th time.

The Raiders chauffeured the Knights to a .000 attacking average, leading them to as many attacking errors as they had kills. Grace Buchanan carried the load with 10 of WPU's 17 kills.

Taylor Russell's 24 assists helped SOU hit .387 as a team, its highest clip of 2021. Simone Gordon had nine kills and assisted four blocks, Carol Melo added seven kills, Karina Oliveira recorded seven digs and Kayla Neidigh added six.

The straight-set win was the Raiders' 11th. They finished ninth place in the CCC standings, which Corban topped with an outright title clinched with a sweep Saturday at Lewis-Clark State (Idaho).

The Raiders are eligible to return everyone next year except Jones and Chanel Groom, whose season ended prematurely in September.
