ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon men's soccer team ended the spring season on a high note Sunday, knocking off NCAA Division II foe Humboldt State (Calif.) 2-1 at Raider Stadium on
Noah Addie's go-ahead goal in the 70th minute.
The first-ever counting matchup between the teams was also the Raiders' first game since COVID-19 protocols put them on pause following their March 22 win over Warner Pacific, ending their Cascade Conference campaign. They finished the season with a 4-1 record.
Humboldt State (1-1) was first on the board in the 63rd minute, when SOU keeper
Liam Kalhagen made a diving save of Yushi Katu's shot but Thomas Augee streaked in for the put-back.
Just 34 seconds later, the Raiders got an equalizer on
Alan Gaytan's third goal of the season – a penalty kick that was created when HSU keeper Jacob Cotton misplayed a ball and subsequently drew a yellow card for pulling
Sam Walker down in the box in an attempt to stop an easy score.
Six minutes after that,
Moises Hernandez dribbled down the right sideline and made a pretty pass through the defense to Addie streaking into the box, and Addie skipped it past Cotton for the lead.
Kalhagen came up with three saves, his best of the day in the 88th minute on a leaping grab of Christian Gonzalez's bicycle kick that would have tied the score.
Moments earlier, HSU's Marcus Abdel-Malek hit the right post with his equalizer attempt.
Hernandez's assist was his second. He capped the spring as SOU's points leader with six.
