ASHLAND – AJ Sims heated up down the stretch to record 21 points and eight rebounds and lead Humboldt State (Calif.) past Southern Oregon, 73-65, in a non-conference game Wednesday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
Sims shot 8-of-14 from the field for the Lumberjacks. With his team leading 57-53 at the seven-minute mark in the second half, he ran up a personal 9-0 run with 3-pointers on three straight possessions.
HSU, of the NCAA Division II's California Collegiate Athletic Association, bumped their record to 4-5. The Raiders dropped to 3-4.
Josh Meyer led the Raiders with 15 points and seven rebounds, shooting 5-of-9 to help SOU get to 46 percent from the field as a team.
Tez Allen had 11 points, five assists, five rebounds and four steals;
Jake Virga registered 11 points and four assists; and
Mason Whittaker added eight points, six assists and six rebounds.
The Raiders were doomed by 16 turnovers. They also collected 11 fewer offensive rebounds than the Lumberjacks (16-5).
HSU forward Gabrys Sadaunykas added 15 points and 10 rebounds.
SOU will host back-to-back Cascade Conference games against Warner Pacific next, tipping off at 6 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.
