ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon University women's soccer team gets another shot at an NAIA Top 25 opponent Friday when No. 20 Oregon Tech visits Raider Stadium for a 1:30 p.m. Cascade Conference match.
The Owls (5-1, 2-0 CCC) are back-to-back conference champions and were picked to finish second this year, but are looking for their first win in Ashland since 2013. The Raiders (3-3-1, 1-1-0) split their first CCC games here last weekend and will attempt to pick up some key points while avoiding losing back-to-back home games for the first time in six years.
FAN POLICY: All fans 12 and older planning to attend are subject to
SOU's new vaccination policy, which requires proof of full vaccination against Covid-19 or a negative test taken no more than 48 hours prior to entry. Photo ID must be presented for verification. Per state mandate, non-participants will also be required to wear masks regardless of vaccination status.
NAIA TOP 25: The CCC was represented in this week's coaches' poll by No. 13 Eastern Oregon and No. 20 OIT. The Raiders scored three NAIA Top 25 wins in 2019 – all on the road at No. 11 Vanguard (Calif.), No. 25 Westmont (Calif.) and No. 25 Northwest (Wash.) – which enabled them to earn their first NAIA National Tournament berth despite finishing fifth in the conference standings. Prior to that season, they hadn't collected a win against a ranked team since 2010. They already played one ranked opponent tough this month, dropping a 1-0 decision at No. 18 Westmont.
LAST WEEK IN REVIEW: In Friday's CCC opener, SOU dominated Evergreen (Wash.) 6-0 as
Sarah Mauk recorded two goals and one assist, turning in a five-point outing for the second time in her career as the only Raider who's done it since 2015.
Phoebe Bunn and
Baylee Touey added a goal and two assists apiece. The Raiders lost 1-0 to Northwest 24 hours later as Callie Wright scored the lone goal in the 50th minute. Touey had all three of their shots on goal, but keeper Kiertstin Patefield stopped each of them.
BRIEFLY:
- SOU's goals-allowed average of 0.43 is No. 3 on the CCC leaderboard. The Raiders have four shutouts in seven games.
- Both of the Raiders' keepers rank top-six in CCC save percentage: Jessie Selby (33 saves, 2 goals allowed) is No. 2 at .943, and Ashlynn Hernandez (8 saves, 1 goal allowed) is No. 6 at .889. Selby's career save percentage of .864 is the best in team history.
- The Raiders haven't lost a home game in which they've scored at least one goal since Aug. 25, 2014, a span of 40 games that meet the criteria. They've won 16 straight CCC games when tallying at least two goals.
- Sarah Mauk's career totals went to 12 goals and five assists last week, giving her 29 points in 30 games at SOU. Touey's totals went to 10 goals and four assists, giving her 24 points in 26 games.
- Three different Raiders have accounted for the team's game-winning goals: Mauk, Morgan Rohmann and Mia Santander.
ABOUT OREGON TECH: The Owls have outscored their opponents 11-1, giving up their only goal to Lewis & Clark and allowing just 12 shots on goal so far. Mehana Ortiz (2 goals, 3 assists) owns a team-high seven points after going for 9 goals and 11 assists in 14 games last spring to earn CCC Offensive Player of the Year honors, while Maddie Miller scored 11 goals during the spring and has two now. SOU leads the head-to-head series 22-10-3, but the Owls took both meetings 1-0 last spring in Klamath Falls.
