Baird tallies winner as Raiders upset No. 20 Oregon Tech

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon women's soccer team had another gear saved for No. 20-ranked archrival Oregon Tech in a 2-1 win Friday afternoon at Raider Stadium.

In their first NAIA Top 25 win of the season, the Raiders upset the Owls behind goals from Sarah Mauk and Kaya Baird. The latter was delivered in the 74th minute to break a 1-1 tie and make SOU just the second opponent to defeat the two-time defending conference champions in a CCC game since the start of 2019.

The Raiders upped their records to 4-3-1 overall and 2-1 in the CCC, bouncing back from last weekend's 1-0 loss to Northwest (Wash.). The Owls fell to 5-2 and 2-1.

Mauk's fourth goal of the season put the Raiders ahead nine minutes into the game. Baylee Touey started the play on the right sideline beyond midfield, then cut through the OIT defense toward the box and sent a through pass that gave Mauk an eight-yard shot from the left post. It was Touey's team-leading third assist to the season; each of them have gone to Mauk.

OIT's Mehana Ortiz leveled the score in the 32nd minute when she turned and shot from 28 yards deep off a pass from Kyra Cambra and lined her attempt just under the crossbar.

Baird's first goal since 2019 was the highlight of an action-packed second half that saw the teams combine for 12 shots after generating seven in the first.

Mia Santander set it up, handling the ball on the right sideline and skipping a pass into the box. Baird gathered it with a defender on her hip and fired a rocket from five yards out past Alyx Burkhartzmeyer for the winner.

Though they won both meetings last year, the Owls still haven't won in Ashland since 2013.

SOU keeper Ashlynn Hernandez helped keep that streak alive with seven saves.

The Raiders will play four of their next five games on the road, starting next Friday and Saturday at Rocky Mountain (Mont.) and Providence (Mont.).
