LEWISTON, Idaho – The No. 21-ranked Southern Oregon University volleyball team made sure its introduction to Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) as a Cascade Conference opponent was an uncomfortable one Friday night at the LCSC Activity Center.
In their sixth consecutive win to start the season, the Raiders opened their CCC schedule by dominating the Warriors (5-4) with a 25-23, 25-10, 25-17 sweep, their fifth straight-set victory already. LC State, which joined the CCC in the 2020-21 season that SOU opted out of, was dispatched in the teams' first matchup as conference opponents in 80 tidy minutes.
Outside hitter
Shelby Young dropped in 11 kills on 17 swings, boosting the Raiders' attacking average to .230 overall.
Hailey Van Well contributed 11 kills of her own, reaching double figure for the fifth time in six outings.
"That was an excellent effort from our team tonight," SOU coach
Josh Rohlfing said. "I'm proud of the way they stayed composed and rectified errors with communication. We moved really well and our passing and serving helped us play exceptionally efficient."
In that department,
Kadyn Jones and
Karina Oliveira both had 12 digs. Collectively, the Raiders conceded a single service ace.
Gwen Sheldon distributed 21 assists, also helping
Simone Gordon and
Hannah Stadstad reach seven kills apiece.
Of the Raiders' five blocks,
Sadie Byrd and Gordon both assisted three, and
Taylor Jackson was in on two.
The first set was the tightest, but SOU won it on its fourth set point thanks to a bad set. After falling behind 7-6 in the second, the Raiders dominated the rest of the way.
Cassidy Nelson's six kills led the Warriors. She needed 21 swings to get them and was forced into five attacking errors.
SOU will work the late shift Saturday, visiting Walla Walla (Wash.) for a 9 p.m. contest.
