SOU lights up Lions with 15 3-pointers

PORTLAND – The Southern Oregon men's basketball team got its money's worth out of an abbreviated road trip Friday night at Multnomah.

In their sixth straight win, the Raiders blistered the nets to blow out Multnomah 99-75 on Jim Skagen Court as Atmar Mundu paced six players in double figures with 24 points.

As a team, they shot a season-best 68 percent from the field and went 15-of-24 from 3-point range – giving them their highest 3-point percentage (63) on 15 or more makes since 2012. They'd cracked double figures in makes beyond the arc in only three of their previous 16 outings.

Mundu was just one of the culprits, going 10-of-14 from the field and 4-of-7 from 3. Jake Virga canned 4-of-5 triples off the bench, while Joe Juhala, Josh Meyer and Mason Whittaker were each 2-of-3 downtown.

Juhala scored 13 points, had four rebounds and grabbed two steals. Meyer collected eight rebounds and two steals as he, Virga and K'wan Carter scored 12 apiece. Tez Allen added 10 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals in another well-rounded effort.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Meyer and Mundu, the team's eighth and ninth of the first half, put the Raiders up 53-40 at the break.

The Lions (8-10, 4-6), losers of five straight, got no closer in the second.

The Raiders have shot 54 percent or better four times during their streak. They'll tack on another win to it Saturday via forfeit with Warner Pacific, their scheduled opponent, unable to compete due to Covid-19 issues. It'll be their second forfeit victory after Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) was forced to bow out last week.

Mundu has been a consistent spark through the team's offensive ascent. He's scored 15 or more in six consecutive outings; he didn't hit that number once in the 11 before that. He's done it with unusual efficiency, shooting 67 percent (40-of-60) to average 19.2 points during the stretch.

The Raiders will be on the road again next week to face College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon. They'll enter the trip in third place.
