Raiders grind out 49-46 win against Evergreen

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon women's basketball team is not above winning ugly. Supporting evidence continued to mount when the Raiders defeated Evergreen (Wash.) 49-46 to complete a Cascade Conference weekend sweep Saturday at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

SOU shrugged off a 26-percent shooting and an 11-minute scoring drought, leaning on a defense that wore down the Geoducks with 14 steals to avenge a frustrating loss against them at the beginning of the month. The Raiders' 11th consecutive home victory made them 19-4 overall and 12-3 in the CCC.

For the second night in a row, it came down to a defensive stop as they forced Geoducks guard Sha'nece Garret to take a contested 3-pointer for the potential tie. Mallory Heard rebounded her miss with four seconds left and dribbled out the clock.

Dominique Harding scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half, pulled down six rebounds and had four steals. The senior guard shot 6-of-13 from the field; the rest of the Raiders combined to go 13-of-59.

After going scoreless in the second quarter, they faced their largest deficit at 26-18 when Evergreen's Trinity Betoney opened the third with a jumper. Harding went on to score eight points in the frame, including a bucket that finally tied the score with 23 seconds left.

Garret's layup gave the Geoducks their final lead with 3:34 remaining in the fourth. Danasia Allison tied it moments later with a reverse layup, and after a couple defensive stops Kami Walk put the Raiders ahead on a pair of free throws at the two-minute mark.

Down one, the Geoducks forced a turnover with 24 seconds left but Harding stole the ball right back and assisted Clara Robbins under the basket to put SOU up 49-46.

Allison finished with eight points and five rebounds off the bench and Walk had seven points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Kenadee Honaker sparked the Raiders with five points, five steals, six rebounds and two blocks.

The Geoducks, who were limited to 31-percent shooting, were led by Garret's 23 points.

SOU remains tied with Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) in second place, a half-game back of Eastern Oregon.

The Raiders will play five of their final seven regular-season games on the road, a stretch that starts next week at Corban and Bushnell.
