SOU stays perfect at home by taming Wolves

ASHLAND – Southern Oregon will get out of the weekend having played just a quarter and a half of stressful basketball. That's how long Walla Walla (Wash.) hung around Friday before running out of firepower at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

The first-place Raiders' 64-40 victory over the Wolves bumped them to 14-2 overall and 7-1 in the Cascade Conference. They'll add another win to their record Saturday courtesy of a forfeit by Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), which entered the week in a tie for first but will absorb a pair of losses due to COVID-19 issues that arose prior to its scheduled game Friday at Oregon Tech.

WWU, which dressed just six players, dropped to 1-14 and 0-8.

Kami Walk had 15 points and seven rebounds and Syd'Nee Fryer logged 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Raiders. Dominique Harding and Brianna Phiakhamngon both scored 11, and Phiakhamngon added four assists and three steals.

Kenadee Honaker came up with five steals, helping the Raiders force 31 more turnovers.

Their defensive pressure excused a lackluster night from the field, where they shot 31 percent.

After falling behind 21-16 through 13 minutes, they rode a 20-2 run into halftime and opened the third quarter with a 12-1 spurt.

Walk tallied 15 of her points in the second and third frames. Mallory Heard scored all eight of hers in the third, knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers.

Isabella Robles had team-highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolves. Carolina Montes scored 10.

The Raiders improved to 8-0 at home. They're unbeaten in 12 all-time meetings with the Wolves.

They'll be on the road next Friday at Multnomah. If they have enough individuals eligible to compete, they'll also receive a forfeit win the next day at Warner Pacific, which announced a two-week shutdown of all its athletics programs on Thursday.
