C of I uses big 2nd half to end Raiders' streak

ASHLAND – College of Idaho capitalized on some second-half mistakes and ended Southern Oregon's winning streak at six games with a 3-1 decision in Cascade Conference play Saturday at Raider Stadium.

C of I's Eric Hornung scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season, the first to break a scoreless tie in the 57th minute when he stepped in front of an errant pass on SOU's back line and converted a one-on-one chance against Raider keeper Casey Ruvolo.

Sam Walker equalized for the Raiders seven minutes later. He was set up by Noah Addie's cross that found Alan Gaytan for a sliding, left-footed pass in the box. But in the 73rd, Emil Powles took advantage of SOU's hand-ball in the box by knocking in a penalty kick for the game-winning score.

Hornung tacked on in the 76th minute via Ben Garrick's assist.

Before Hornung's initial score, the Raiders (9-5 overall, 6-3 CCC) hadn't given up a goal in 586 minutes over a stretch of seven games. They and the Yotes (8-4-1, 6-3) are now tied for fourth place on the CCC table, though the win gave C of I the potential tiebreaker.

"I thought we showed some very explosive moments of creative offense today and created some really well-constructed opportunities," SOU head coach Davie Carmichael said. "We had a few mistakes that cost us the result but it certainly does not define our performance overall. I am proud of how this group reacted to the defeat and we know it's just a bump in the road. We are positive moving into the last stretch of the season and trust this team to continue to perform and produce quality."

Walker's goal was his eighth of the season and fourth in conference play. The rest of the Raiders were frustrated throughout the afternoon, unable to connect on their 15 other shots. Adrian Villegas, who'd tallied in each of SOU's last three games, hit the post twice. Brad Thomas found the crossbar in the closing minutes.

The win was C of I's first against the Raiders since their inaugural season in 2015.

SOU, which has four regular-season matches left to play, is on the road next Friday at 12th-place Bushnell and Saturday at second-place Corban.
