ASHLAND – Eastern Oregon stopped Southern Oregon's last-ditch effort two yards short of the end zone and came away with a 21-14 win in the Frontier Conference season finale on Saturday afternoon at Raider Stadium.
The Raiders finished up at 3-7. They took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter before EOU quarterback Andrew James snatched it away, completing 15-of-25 attempts for 282 yards and three touchdowns. Drew Reyes caught the go-ahead 29-yard TD pass with 13:39 left in the fourth quarter.
SOU, which gave true freshman quarterback
Levi Durrell his first start, was gifted a couple chances to tie or take the lead. With 3:16 remaining, EOU kick Ethan Cutler missed a 28-yard field goal wide left. And on 3rd-and-19 on the Raiders' ensuing drive, Mountaineers defensive back Joey Gutierrez was all alone near midfield when a potential interception hit him in the chest and fell to the ground.
The Raiders converted on the next play with Durrell's 24-yard pass to
Bryce Goggin, and a 13-yard Goggin reception eventually gave them 1st-and-goal with 1:05 remaining. A few plays later, Durrell took off from the 7-yard line and was stopped short by Caden Beazley and Blaine Shaw.
Durrell finished 20-of-35 for 231 yards. He had a 19-yard TD pass to
Jackson Clemmer and rushed in a one-yard score.
Ben Graziani caught five passes for 71 yards and Goggin caught seven for 69, while
Gunner Yates rushed 12 times for 55 yards.
Jake Regino led the defense with 10 tackles – his eighth double-digit effort of the season.
Cente Borja collected his second interception in SOU's last three games,
Nolan Rinefort made nine tackles, and
Noah Turnbull had eight tackles, including two for losses.
The Mountaineers finished 2-9 overall and 2-8 in the Frontier.
