Malatare, EOU spoil Raiders' comeback in overtime

LA GRANDE – All-star Eastern Oregon guard Phillip Malatare put on a mid-range clinic in overtime and steered the Mountaineers to a 96-90 Cascade Conference win over Southern Oregon on Saturday night at Quinn Coliseum.

Malatare, a 6-foot senior, scored the final 10 points of the game, converting on five consecutive possessions, and finished with 22 on 10-of-18 shooting. His third off-the-dribble jumper of the stretch, a contested fall-away from 19 feet, rolled in to give EOU a four-point lead with 25 seconds left and all but sealed the deal.

His heroics spoiled a Raider comeback that saw them battle back from a 15-point deficit in the second half. Atmar Mundu was the catalyst with 17 points in the period, and his three-point play cut the deficit to one with 24 seconds left. After the Mountaineers split a pair of free throws, Brett Hollins hit a fadeaway in the post to tie the score at 86 with 4.5 seconds left, ultimately sending the teams to OT.

The Mountaineers completed a weekend sweep to go to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the CCC. SOU fell to 3-4 and 0-2.

Mundu finished with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, and Hollins scored 13 while going 3-of-4 from downtown. Tez Allen scored 16 and had three assists.

When Josh Meyer opened OT with a bucket inside, he gave the Raiders their first lead since the 10-minute mark in the first half. He totaled nine points and eight rebounds. Alongside him in the frontcourt, Dominic McGarvey battled foul trouble for the second night in a row but registered nine points, five assists and four boards.

Defense was the Raiders' undoing. They watched EOU shoot 58 percent from the field and 10-of-19 from 3 with just eight turnovers. Preston Chandler scored 19, and Emmit Taylor hit four 3-pointers off the bench.

Seven of the last eight last matchups between SOU and EOU have either gone to overtime or been decided by four or fewer points in regulation.

The Raiders will visit Oregon Tech next Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
