ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon men's basketball team held the Cascade Conference's highest-scoring team 44 points below its season average, cruising to a 66-42 defeat of Multnomah on Saturday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
With their seventh consecutive home win and a Corban loss, the Raiders (16-12 overall, 13-7 CCC) took over sole possession of third place with two regular-season games remaining.
They raced out to an 18-2 lead over the opening eight minutes as the Lions (13-15, 9-11) – fresh off an 82-80 upset of then-first-place Oregon Tech – clanked 13 of their first 14 attempts. Their aim didn't improve much: they finished with a 22-percent mark from the field – the lowest mark for an SOU opponent in over a decade.
Josh Meyer amassed team-highs of 13 points and nine rebounds for the Raiders.
Atmar Mundu had 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists,
Tez Allen went for five points, nine rebounds and two steals, and
Joe Juhala added five points and nine boards. Four more Raiders scored six points apiece.
A night after making just one 3-pointer, the Raiders hit eight. Mundu,
Jake Virga and
Mason Whittaker accounted for two apiece.
Jayson McMillan enjoyed a successful senior night with six points on 3-of-4 shooting and five rebounds in his first start of the season.
Terin Johnson had 15 points and seven rebounds for Multnomah, which went just 2-of-21 from deep.
SOU will complete the regular season next Friday at fourth-place Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) and Saturday at last-place Walla Walla (Wash.).
